I make a dish called “Plantain Lasagna.” It’s pretty tasty if I do say so myself, and last night I finally documented some of the process of building it.
The cool thing about making Plantain Lasagna for others is that it’s usually the only time anyone’s ever had it, so by default, it is “the best Plantain Lasagna you’ve ever had.”
Thanks to my wonderful (read: patient + trusting) guests at dinner last night as well as my fantastic (read: great bartender + pastry chef!) co-hosts Jessica and Brian.

27
I turned 27 this past weekend. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes.
And after living in NYC for over 2 years, I finally got my parents to visit - which was my mom’s first trip to NYC… ever. Yes… really.
We lucked out on the weather and spent a lot of time outside in SoHo, the West Village, on the Highline, Central Park, etc. and hit up a couple ‘chef’s’ restaurants (my dad’s a chef by trade).
Other highlights include:
- A few games of intense pickup basketball with Dan, Joe, Nick and a bunch of scrappy punks at Stuytown. I’ve got skinned knees and elbows from laying out for rebounds and I love it.
- Meeting up with 4 of my closest friends - Dan, Joe, Matt and Mark - for a couple beers. Doesn’t matter where we are, we have fun together. I love these guys.
- Talking to Mark Suster on the phone for a bit. I have a ton of respect for him as an entrepreneur and it was great to connect in a solid conversation about HomeField. Thanks Mark!
- Dinner at SD26 thanks to Daisy’s connections with Massimo Vignelli whom I was able to meet, too. Very cool place, excellent food and service. If you’re a baller or have parents willing to foot the bill, try it!
- First game of the year for my NYAC lacrosse team. We won 21-3 I think. I’ll take it. ;)
- Allen Morgan making intros to tons of great entrepreneurs, investors and the like. In a matter of 24 hours, I’d lined up meetings with some excellent people who I’m excited to meet. Thank you Allen!
- Seeing the premier of “The Startup” - a mini documentary on my startup featured on NYC 3.0. It’s great to see the finished product after almost 5 months of filming. If you’ve got some time and/or interest in startups, it’s worth watching. Hopefully it’s back up - all the traffic yesterday crashed the site! Nice work Alex and Vadim.
Great weekend with lots of my favorite people. Thanks all!
I am very fortunate to have grown up in the restaurant business, with a father who cares about eating well and a mother who grew fresh vegetables in our garden. Not everyone is that lucky, and it’s a shame that America is consequently in such bad shape (literally).
Oliver’s TED talk is brilliant and I hope his wish comes true.
One of the most powerful TED talks I’ve seen. This is part of the problem we’re hoping to attack via our investment in Local Dirt.
@JoeYevoli's Thanksgiving
- Me: How was your Thanksgiving?
- Joe: Great... I threw up.
- Me: What? Why?
- Joe: I think I just ate too fast, so I threw up. But the food was phenomenal...
- ...I'd do it again.
i had a (big) hand in making this bread… delicious.
delicious and healthy carrot bread
mix 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tbsp granulated sugar…
add to…
1 cup shredded carrots, 3/4 cup chopped walnuts, 1/2 cup of diced apple, 1/4 cup raisins, 1/2 cup applesauce, 1/8 cup oil, 1/4 tsp of vanilla…
put combined mixes into 6” x 4” x 3” baking container and pop in oven at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes and voila!

Some scary stats in here about U.S. consumption. I’m glad I’m not a soda drinker…
Healthy Homemade Swiss Muesli Raisin Cookies
Last food post for a while, I swear. I didn’t take a pic of last night’s roast chicken, but I do have a pic of the cookies I made for dessert. Again I used whole wheat flour, cut the sugar in half, used Smart Balance butter, mixed in some original Swiss Muesli, and a hearty helping of raisins… then drizzled a lil’ honey on top before baking. Yum.
Healthy Homemade Whole Grain Banana Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate Muffins - my own recipe and title ;)
I swear, they’re healthy. I used 1/2 the recommended sugar, only whole wheat flour, my favorite Smart Balance peanut butter and good Endangered Species dark chocolate. These things are diesel and were a great start to my Saturday morning…
