Fresh Eggs!

My dad got my mom chickens for Mother’s Day. We’ve been waiting for them to mature and start laying eggs all summer. I just now got this email from my mom…

Dear Family,

The little white chicken is the star winner with the first egg.

This morning we had the first two eggs. At $600 [invested in building a coup/feed etc.] an egg we really should have had champagne with them for breakfast . They were soooo gooood.

Shark!
Found this dogfish shark washed up on the beach this AM.
Funny… I literally just told someone on Quora there are no sharks on Cape Cod… no man-eaters anyway. Seriously Stacia, this little guy can’t hurt you.

One Year

A little over a year ago, I started spending time with a girl I’d met just once while we were in school together at Brown. On a whim, I invited her over for “a dinner party I was planning” and when she accepted, I then had to scramble to actually invite other guests, too!  [Cooking was no problem, though]. ;)

Despite the long roundtrip on the subway for her, I leveraged the big TV in my apartment as a reason for her to come over and watch the Celtics in the playoffs.

Apparently, she liked me. [Update: And still does!)

And I her.

Today, marks one year together and I’m still as excited about us now as I was last May 19. It’s been a really fun year, despite the stress of my rollercoaster life as a startup founder and hers as a student living in NYC.

Some of my favorite moments have been on the beach at home on Cape Cod, running races and doing a triathlon together, cooking in our tiny apartment, teaching Daisy to surf and snowboard for the first time (yes, this was actually fun!), seeing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs play ‘Maps’ acoustic at Radio City Music Hall…

…but still, the most vivid moment was a year ago today, sitting on a bench watching the sunset together from the tip of Manhattan.

Some people go to church, I go to the sea… Happy Easter from Cape Cod, MA.

Native Americans vs. Cape Wind Project - irony aplenty

UPDATE: The New York Times is in on the discussion too

The Cape Wind Project is a proposed wind farm off of Cape Cod, MA that will generate about 75% of the average electricity demand for Cape Cod, Matha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.  It would be the first of its kind.

Cape Wind

It is steeped in controversy - as many locals (including renowned politicians who ‘support the environment’) want the benefits of renewable electricity, but they don’t want giant wind turbines ‘in their backyard.’

While I think the project management and some of their choices thus far are not stellar, I am generally for renewable energy and I’d rather lose a little bit of ocean real estate to ensure that my grandkids will have an ocean to swim in years from now.

That being said, I am awed - but not surprised - that the latest ploy to stop Cape Wind is an effort to protect the ocean region on behalf of the Native Americans.  They are, of course, happy to have more protected land under their jurisdiction - maybe they can build a floating casino!

My gripe here, is that Native Americans, allegedly in touch with Mother Earth and all her ailments, are against a renewable energy source.

“The Wampanoag tribes of Aquinnah and Mashpee have said for several years that the Cape Wind project would disturb their spiritual sun greetings and submerged ancestral burying grounds in Nantucket Sound.”

OK… I get it.  Millions of years ago the ocean wasn’t so high and they’ve got some long-lost cousins down there, but are they really laying claim here?

It just doesn’t add up to me.  Someone, somewhere, has to make a sacrifice in order for us to make change in the world for the better.  In this case, it’s going to be the Native Americans, the residents of the Cape & Islands and the few gulls who fly into the turbines… but it’s all for the betterment of our future.  (And we’ve got a gull problem anyway).

There was another sign at Coffee O that said ‘Persons on cellular phones will be served when you finish your call.’  I love local businesses.

Weekend highlights:

A great Friday at Brown catching up with alumni old and new before the @BrownLacrosse 2009 commemoration.

Spending a couple nights at home on Cape Cod, particularly a nice dinner with my parents at the family restaurant, The Beachmoor.

Realizing my truck, overdue for an inspection by 1.5 months, was also due for re-registration… 6 months ago.  #igotluckywhenthatStateTrooperdidntnotice

Getting 8 hours of sleep for once.

Making some great new business connections.

Finally, upgrading my underwear - boxers just aren’t meant to last 7 years (but hey, we’re still bootstrapping).

Confirming my trip to San Francisco next weekend.

Buying $30 worth of peanut butter (yes, it really is worth it to buy at home in bulk, and yes I’ll go through all 8 large jars we bought, probably sooner than even I expect).

Going for a swim in the ocean at home with someone special.
