The question isn’t who is going to let me, it’s who is going to stop me.

On Over Engineering
I love my (lazy) engineer.
danspinosa:
During our meeting with Fred Wilson last week he mentioned something fairly obvious about our company: we have too few engineers (i.e. just me). He was making the point that one particular path for our company could see it thrive (netting a few million a year in profits) with a small 10-12 person staff (7 engineers or so). But it started me thinking...

What Startups Are Really Like →
Paul Graham writes about the “surprises” founders saw in their experience at YC. I’m happy to report that none of these are surprises to us (anymore) since building HomeField.
By reading Paul Graham from the start, we expected a lot of what is written here - though as he says, maybe not to the extent that we expected. The stuff we didn’t expect, well, now we know.

Never Enough Competition | from This is going to... →
@ceonyc has a great point here. Competition is good (the market is proven).
“In fact, I’d beware of spaces where absolutely no one is playing. Capital moves pretty efficiently. If anyone else thought there was money to be made in what you’re doing—I find it hard to believe no one else would be trying it.”
It’s execution that matters.

Thoughts about "the winner takes it all"
Love this post from @bijan. He’s absolutely right here.
In our experience building HomeField, we’ve learned of a number of competitors who offer feature X or feature Y or Z. Some of them are great features (and some aren’t). But we’ve purposely tried to avoid the ‘feature creep’ that so often spreads software too thin. Applications can so easily lose focus...

Weekend Highlights
I realized I neglected to post last weekend’s highlights. Here they are:
Friday night: A sunset walk, a nice birthday dinner for @daisyames in North Beach, San Francisco and a great stay at the Olympic Club.
Saturday morning: Beating the Olympic Club with just a skeleton crew from the NYAC.
Meeting John Gagliardi, founder of Maverick Lacrosse, and talking about the industry.
Driving...

I’ve always been a fan of Rob Machado - as a surfer and as an individual, doing what he’s passionate about and creating change in the world.
While surf movies typically have a lame history at the box office, I’m excited to see this and I hope they capture his story well.
At the very least, there should be some awesome surfing.

Facebook Terms of Use Violation: Self-loathing →
My friends once jokingly made up the “I hate Reece” club (in real life). I then took it upon myself to create the “I hate Reece” group on Facebook…
Today - 4 years later - Facebook took it down:
The group “i hate reece.” has been removed because it violated our Terms of Use. Among other things, groups that are hateful, threatening, or obscene are not...

Weekend highlights:
A great Friday at Brown catching up with alumni old and new before the @BrownLacrosse 2009 commemoration.
Spending a couple nights at home on Cape Cod, particularly a nice dinner with my parents at the family restaurant, The Beachmoor.
Realizing my truck, overdue for an inspection by 1.5 months, was also due for re-registration… 6 months ago. #igotluckywhenthatStateTrooperdidntnotice
